What medical marijuana products are available in Puerto Rico?

Medical marijuana is permitted in the form of pills, tinctures, oral inhalers, topical ointments and creams, vaporized flowers or concentrates, suppositories, and infused edibles. Smoked cannabis products is not permitted.

How do I get a Puerto Rico medical marijuana card?

If you live in Puerto Rico and have a qualifying medical condition, you will need to obtain a physician recommendation and submit an application to the Department of Health. 

Will out-of-state medical marijuana cards be accepted in Puerto Rico?

Yes. Puerto Rico plans to allow out-of-state patients to make purchases. The patient’s card must be up-to-date and will be verified with the state program that issued the card. The patient must also have a qualifying medical conditions that is covered by Puerto Rico’s medical marijuana law.

I’ve never been to a medical marijuana dispensary. How does it work?

A medical marijuana dispensary is a simple, secure facility designed to provide access for patients to receive their medicine in a safe, welcoming environment. Qualified patients or their caregivers must present their state-issued ID cards at the door. No one else is permitted to enter the establishment other than registered employees attending to the facility. Once inside, visitors are greeted by a friendly staff who are happy to answer questions about the medicine and to help the patient make decisions based on their individual health needs. The patient or caregiver then makes their selection, purchases the medicine, and exits. Security staff monitor events inside and outside the facility.

Where does the medical marijuana come from?

All medical marijuana will be produced in Puerto Rico at one of a few licensed cultivation centers. These facilities are carefully regulated by the Department of Health and must follow strict guidelines to ensure product safety. Dispensaries may not acquire marijuana products from any source other than the licensed and regulated facilities.

What does the science say about medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana has been studied extensively by the scientific community and a great deal is known about the therapeutic benefits of the cannabis plant. What are the age requirements for medical marijuana in Puerto Rico?

Patients 21 or older who have a qualifying medical condition are eligible to register with the program. Patients under 21 must receive medical marijuana recommendations from 2 licensed physicians and have the assistance of a parent or legal companion, who must register with the program along with the patient.

How will my privacy be protected?

Patient records will be maintained by your doctor and the Department of Health. Strict rules protect the privacy of these records, including the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. Your identity and patient status in the medical marijuana program may never be disclosed to anyone without your prior authorization. We take patient privacy very seriously are will gladly answer any questions or concerns you have about this important issue.

How much medical marijuana should a patient take?

Dosage depends on the needs of the individual patient and can vary greatly. Patients experiencing severe chronic pain may consume several moderate to strong doses per day, while patients seeking help with appetite or sleep may sometimes only require a smaller single dose at the onset of symptoms. We provide our patients with instruction in how to carefully adjust dosage to achieve the desired effect.

What conditions are covered by Puerto Rico’s medical marijuana program?

Patients diagnosed with the following medical conditions are eligible to register with the medical marijuana program:

Are patients permitted to cultivate medical marijuana?

Puerto Rico’s medical marijuana program does not permit home cultivation.
