How to Get aCalifornia Medical Cannabis Card

If you’re interested in getting a California Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC), the following steps will guide you through the process. Medical patients are permitted to possess larger quantities and access additional products at dispensaries, so it’s a good idea to become certified if you use cannabis for medical reasons.

Step 1: ELIGIBILITY

Patients diagnosed with any of the following medical conditions are eligible to apply for a card:

  • Anorexia
  • Arthritis
  • Cachexia, or wasting syndrome
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Migraine
  • Persistent muscle spasms, including spasms associated with multiple sclerosis
  • Seizures, including seizures associated with epilepsy
  • Severe nausea
  • Any other chronic or persistent medical symptom that either substantially limits the ability of the person to conduct a major life activity as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, or if not alleviated, may cause serious harm to the patient’s safety or physical or mental health.

Step 2: PHYSICIAN RECOMMENDATION

The next step is to obtain a recommendation for medical marijuana from your physician. When discussing medical cannabis with your doctor, it’s important to be honest about your health situation and explain why you believe medical cannabis treatment will be beneficial for you. Please note that your medical records must reflect your diagnosis and the doctor’s decision to recommend medical marijuana treatment.

Step 3: PATIENT APPLICATION

Once you have your physician recommendation, you’ll need to apply for your card. Applications are processed by the CA county in which you reside. Click here to find the contact information for your county’s program. You’ll need to submit an application or renewal form, including your physician recommendation, valid proof of identity, valid proof of residency, and payment of the application fee. Application fees are set by your county’s program, but cannot exceed $100. The county must verify your application within 30 days and then issue your card within 5 days.

Step 4: MAKING PURCHASES

Once you’ve received your medical marijuana card, you’re welcome to visit the dispensary and make purchases. Our staff will be happy to assist you in selecting the best products for your specific condition and symptoms.
